This is a recommended course sequence based on the current University Catalog for this degree and illustrates how the degree could be completed. Actual plans for individual students will vary based on transfer credits, semester start, advisor recommendations and academic needs.

Be Advised

1. Upper-Level Writing (3-4 credits) complete any of the following courses: ENGL 331, ENGL 332, ENGL 333, ENGL 343, ENGL 353.

2. Diversity Perspectives (3-4 credits) complete at least 1 course: ENGL 203, ENGL 215, ENGL 216, ENGL 305, ENGL 414, ENGL 493.

a. ENGL 414 may count towards either Diversity Perspectives or Literature Elective requirements, not both.

3. British Literature (3-4 credits) complete at least 1 course: ENGL 321, ENGL 322, ENGL 325, ENGL 326, ENGL 327, ENGL 328.

a. ENGL 321, ENGL 322, ENGL 325, ENGL 326, ENGL 327, and ENGL 328 may count towards either British Literature or Literature Elective requirements, not both.

4. American Literature (4 credits) complete at least 1 course: ENGL 310, ENGL 311, ENGL 312, ENGL 313

a. ENGL 310, ENGL 311, ENGL 312, ENGL 313 may count towards either American Literature or Literature Elective requirements, not both.

5. Literature Elective (3-4 credits) complete any of the following courses: ENGL 310, ENGL 311, ENGL 312, ENGL 313, ENGL 321, ENGL 322, ENGL 325, ENGL 326, ENGL 327, ENGL 328, ENGL 402, ENGL 414, ENGL 481, ENGL 493, ENGL 495. ENGL 402 is recommended for high school teachers.

a. ENGL 414 may count towards either Diversity Perspectives or Literature Elective requirements, not both.

b. ENGL 310, ENGL 311, ENGL 312, ENGL 313 may count towards either American Literature or Literature Elective requirements, not both.

c. ENGL 321, ENGL 322, ENGL 325, ENGL 326, ENGL 327, and ENGL 328 may count towards either British Literature or Literature Elective requirements, not both.

6. Completion of 36 semester hours, with at least 12 semester hours in residence at SCSU, and submission of EdTPA scores to satisfy requirements.

7. Double counting of one liberal education course toward an English program is permitted.

8. Programs at St. Cloud State University (SCSU) that lead to a professional licensure or certification are intended to prepare a student for potential licensure or certification in Minnesota. While the SCSU programs meet the relevant academic requirements set by the licensure or certification board/agency in Minnesota, they may or may not meet the educational requirements for a licensure or certification in another state. If you are planning to seek professional licensure or certification outside Minnesota it is important for you to know the specific requirements of the state in which you intend to apply for licensure or certification.

9. A State of Minnesota teaching license requires completion of the subject area major (above), completion of the Professional Education Sequence, and passing grades on the appropriate tests and assessment processes required by the State of Minnesota Department of Education.

a. Students are expected to earn at minimum a “C” in each Professional Education Sequence class. Grade of C- or lower will require a student to retake the course.

10. All SCSU students must complete a minimum of 120 credits to graduate.

11. All SCSU students must have at least 40 credits of 300/400 level courses to graduate.

12. All SCSU students must complete a minimum of 40 credits of Liberal Education courses AND meet the requirements of all 10 goal areas, including RIGR and Diversity.

13. Apply for graduation one semester before you plan to graduate.
