This is a recommended course sequence based on the current University Catalog for this degree and illustrates how the degree could be completed. Actual plans for individual students will vary based on transfer credits, semester start, advisor recommendations and academic needs.

Be Advised

  1. Students should begin working on an art major during the first semester if they wish to graduate in four years.

  2. Students must declare they are art majors to be eligible to register for art courses.

  3. Priority Registration and Advising Day. Students must meet with their Art Department advisor and attend the departmental priority registration and advising day each semester to make sure they are informed of the classes they need to take to graduate in a timely manner and to be able to register for courses.

  4. Materials and Processes (15 credits) earn an average GPA of 2.5 in the following: ART 101, ART 110, ART 111, ART 120, ART 121. Students must pass a portfolio review (benchmark) after successful completion of Materials and Processes courses. Students have two opportunities to pass the portfolio review.

  5. Core Graphic Design Rotation (27 credits) complete all of the following courses: ART 220, ART 221, ART 320, ART 321, ART 322, ART 323, ART 420, ART 421, ART 422. The Core Graphic Design Rotation must be started in Fall semester and Materials & Processes courses must be successfully completed before beginning them. This is a four-semester rotation.

  6. Foundational Art History (6 credits) complete all of the following courses: ART 230, ART 231.

  7. Internship (6 credits) Earn at least 6 credits from ART 444. Students can repeat ART 444 for 3 credits twice, or take ART 444 for 6 credits once.

  8. Studios Electives (12 credits) select from the following: ART 311, ART 340, ART 350, ART 360, ART 370, ART 381, ART 382, ART 383, ART 385. Studios courses can be repeated for a total of 3-12 credits.

  9. Projects Electives (9 credits) complete at least 3 of the following courses: ART 423, ART 443, ART 453, ART 473. Projects courses can be repeated for a total of 3-12 credits.

  10. Design History (3 credits) complete ART 332.

  11. Art History Electives (3 credits) complete at least 1 of the following courses: ART 433, ART 434, ART 435, ART 436, ART 437, ART 438, ART 439.

  12. All SCSU students must complete a minimum of 120 credits to graduate.

  13. All SCSU students must have at least 40 credits of 300/400 level courses to graduate.

  14. All SCSU students must complete a minimum of 40 credits of Liberal Education courses AND meet the requirements of all 10 goal areas, including RIGR and Diversity.

  15. Apply for graduation one semester before you plan to graduate.
