There are two paths available to complete the Special Education Master of Science(MS) program: Path 1) Complete the Graduate Academic and Behavior Strategist Certificate (ABS) first, then complete three additional courses to complete your MS, or Path 2) complete 30 pre-arranged credits at the graduate level that do not lead to licensure. It is important to note that the MS and the ABS are two different programs that "complement" each other. The ABS is a license, the MS is a degree. Path 1 leads to both, Path 2 leads to the degree only.
Current and future teachers seeking an initial license in special education should choose Path 1. This enables teachers to earn their license and masters degree simultaneously. Those who already hold a license in special education or wish to pursue employment in the research, administration, or advocacy sectors should complete Path 2. Prospective students interested in advanced licensure, such as autism and developmental disabilities, can complete additional courses after completing the ABS.
When applying, if interested in Path 1, please apply to the MS program and select the ABS (and any additional graduate certificates) as options to complete.
Path 1: Completed the ABS GC (ABS = Initial SPED License) Note - ABS GC and MS are two different programs
Path 2: MS only (no license)
