Physical Geology

Atmospheric & Earth SciencesUndergraduateCollege of Science and Engineering

Outcome

Explain theories and processes important to geology, such as the rock cycle, plate tectonics, and relative and absolute age, and provide evidence that supports these.

Outcome

Interpret geologic maps, topographic maps, and stratigraphic cross-sections in terms of geologic structures and history.

Outcome

Identify essential rocks, minerals, and sediments based on their physical properties, as well as explain how they formed, and how they are used in our everyday lives.

Outcome

Identify different types of rocks (i.e. sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks) and describe how and where they form, as well as distinguishing features or characteristics of each.

Outcome

Describe the role of the environment in geologic processes (e.g., erosion, streams, groundwater, soils, cryosphere, etc.).

Outcome

Identify and describe various geologic hazards (e.g., earthquakes, mass wasting), the triggers that cause these events, and their consequences.
